Chapter 14

The following day, Swift was at the Montrose Health Club. He’d had an email from Yuna Soto that morning. It had confirmed his impression that she’d kept something back on their first meeting.

STOP PRESS. I’ve been turning this over, and I’ve decided to tell you that I was chatting to a girl in my tutorial group a while back. I’ll call her X. (I wanted to divulge this when I saw you, but X has serious emotional issues and is frankly a bag of nerves, evidenced in psoriasis, but that’s another story.) So, I was hesitating about passing this on, but I told Dean and he said I should. X told me that she’d seen Naomi around the Montrose club a couple of times with a woman called Demi Holland. Said they were very friendly, hung out in the juice bar together, etc. X — who would collapse into a heap if she knew I’d talked to you — goes to the Montrose now and again for head massages and she said Demi works there. Over to you.

PS: did you get a blind for your office yet? On reflection, I’d recommend deep orange — a warm colour, energising and positive, so spot on for representing your business.

Yuna would have approved of the Montrose club’s understated, sleek foyer with its pale ash floor and silvery tones. The atmosphere was hushed, more like a church than a place of activity and sweat. Membership fees were eye-watering.

The assistant at the desk told Swift that Ms Holland was conducting a class at present, but if he’d like to wait, she’d be available shortly. Swift helped himself to a complimentary coffee and sat by a cascading water feature of five stone pouring pots. The ripples were soothing, but didn’t stop him worrying about Faith. He wondered if he should speak to Eli, but that would be intrusive and treading on Faith’s toes. It would be the kind of action that Simone or Lucy Wallace might take and that was enough to put him off.

He was lost in thought, a little mesmerised by the flowing water when a woman approached him, hand held out in greeting.

‘Hello, I’m Demi Holland. You were asking for me. Are you interested in one of my classes?’

He rose, shook her warm, dry hand and introduced himself. ‘Hi, my name’s Tyrone Swift. What classes do you take?’

She sat in a chair next to him and crossed her legs. She was in her twenties, slim and supple in a black tracksuit with lime piping. Her cheeks were flushed pink and her long, light brown hair was tied back in a grip. She could fit the scant description of the woman whom Dean Ludlow and Payne Goodyear had seen with Naomi.

‘General fitness, body combat and body balance. I also lead meditation groups. Which are you interested in?’

‘None. I’m interested in Naomi Ludlow. She used to be a member here.’

Demi Holland looked startled and then focused on the water cascade. ‘Naomi? In what sense?’

‘I’m a private investigator, asking questions about her death.
